Yoga
Yoga is a powerful aid to
healing, not least
because it can help to
strengthen the immune
system. For anyone with
cancer, yoga is a real and
practical source of
empowerment - because
it is something that you
can do for yourself. You
have the control.

In yoga, the body is
gently moved  by
practicing physical
postures (also called
asanas). These help to
balance all the systems of
the body:
musculoskeletal, nervous
system, circulatory,
respiratory, digestive, and
endocrine.

The whole person is
involved when something
is out of balance, and
these postures are
practiced in connection to
the breath to support the
whole body and mind.

These practices also help
one to deal with the
traumas that come with a
diagnosis of a life-
changing illness, which
can brings with it
emotions that can be
overwhelming: shock,
fear, anger, doubt,
anxiety and grief to name
some of the most
common.

The simple breathing,
relaxation and meditation
techniques can help one
cope with them. They can
also be of considerable
help in counteracting the
stresses of surgery,
chemotherapy and
radiation by lowering
stress hormones and
strengthening the immune
system.

Pilates
Following cancer,
individuals may fear
returning to exercise.
Pilates can provide a
gentle reintroduction to
movement at any stage of
recovery. If you can lie on
your back and breathe,
you can start Gentle
Pilates at the Wellness
Community. Patti Petrella,
the Pilates instructor
creates a relaxed
program and progresses
you slowly.
