What is better for losing weight
Aerobic or Resistance?

Good question, but not an easy
answer.   Let me say right up front
that I'm a big fan of strength
training. Muscle makes you look
better and I wish I had more of them.

Now let me say that it probably is
NOT quite as good as aerobic
training for losing weight.   I've
changed my opinion slightly, as new
research has come to light.  As I've
said in the past it is important to put
on some muscle to boost your
metabolism, but, now it seems, it is
even more effective to boost your
metabolism through aerobics.

Your basal metabolic rate, or BMR,
is  the amount of calories you burn
at rest. Your BMR is important
because it makes up a large
percentage of the total calories that
you burn.

Your calorie burning post-exercise
oxygen consumption after your
workout is over is known as the
"afterburn,"
This is the extra calories you burn
after exercise.

Lets compare running for 40
minutes to weight training for 40
minutes:

According to the authoritative
"Compendium of Physical Activities."

The tally is as follows:
The running will burn 522 calories,
the strength training about 136.
The afterburn  burns an extra 20 to
30 calories for each group.  Muscles
burn extra calories at rest but not as
much as we onetime thought and
not enough to beat aerobics for
burning calories.

Honestly,  I recommend both!
Weight loss works best when you:
Eat less,  Add resistance and
areobic exercise to increase your
daily calorie deficit and most of all
be consistent with your exercise.

Try Trish's new class which
alternates between cardio and
resistance for the best of both
exercises.  cardio pump circuit, fat
blaster, shape and tone &
kickboxing are also effective
combinations of aerobic and
resistance.

Meet Tricia White

Tricia is our instructor
for the new
arerobic/circuit class
offered on
Wednesday evenings
at 7:00.

We wanted to know a
little bit more about
her, so we asked her a
few questions.

Question:   Tell us a
little bit about yourself
and how you became
interested in fitness?

I am 23 years old. I was
born and raised in
Pataskala Ohio and
went to school at The
Fashion Institute of
Design and
Merchandising in Los
Angeles California. It is
in Hollywood were I
developed a strong
interest in Yoga
and Pilates. I started
taking classes and
have been enjoying it
ever since.

I have always enjoyed
physical activity. I
started as a gymnast
at the age of 4.  I
developed very strict
discipline and physical
activity became a
lifestyle for me.

I was at the gym for
training six days a
week in three hour
increments in order to
practice for
competition.I was say
that I like a good
balance when I am
exercising.

I like for my
classes to be high
energy, but to
incorporate weight
training, and flexibility.

I would say that the
best thing that I have
learned would be to
strengthen
your core. In fact, with
a strong core during
any form of exercise it
should be engaged.

I am currently working
at The Estates at New
Albany with Cara
Pennell. She would
always express her
excitement about the
classes at Body/Spirit
Fitness; therefore, I
knew I had to attend.

Question:  anything
else that you would like
us  know about you?

I have been a
vegetarian since the
age of 10. Healthy
eating is a way of
life.

Welcome to our family
at Body/Spirit Fitness!
We are all looking
forward to your class.
(Especially Patti since
she will get to leave
early-or at least not as
late!)

Paula Gledhill

What is your current
exercise routine like?

My exercise routine:  I try to
come 2-3 days a week to
classes.  I do the treadmill at
home for one hour the days
I don't get to class.  I take off
Friday.

You are a regularly
attending member here at
Body/Spirit Fitness....have
you always known the type
of exercise you like?   How
did you discover exercise
you could stick with?

I took step aerobics for 10
years.  I was getting tired of
that and tried Pilates.  I liked
it very much.  A friend at
work was taking an
Ashtanga Yoga class, so I
went to a free class with
her.  I liked it so much I took
a beginners class.  I felt like
Yoga was something that
helped my stress as much
as my body.
Yoga is something I will
keep in my routine.
I look forward to my
exercise everyday, no
matter what it is.  It makes
me feel like I am doing the
best I can for myself.

Have you learned anything
special since coming to
Body/Spirit Fitness?

I feel more comfortable at
Body/Spirit Fitness than any
other organization I have
joined.  The friendly people
and quiet atmosphere are
part of it.

Is there anything you feel
from your perspective that
needs to be shared with the
current membership here at
Body/Spirit Fitness?

The classes that challenge
me are the circuit training
and kick boxing.  I like to try
routines that are just within
reach of my abilities.  I think
that exercise is a very
important part of our life.
When you find a place you
are comfortable at and look
forward to going, you have
found THE PLACE.
