“It was the best of times..
it was the worst of
times”   December 2004
OK-so I borrowed a
quote from “Tale of Two
Cities”, but the weather
proved to be challenging
to our BSF members.
Thanks to all who
responded.  How did you
experience your
December?
We begin with
Nancy
Eagleson’s
story:
“The Winter Break That
Wasn’t”
We were without power
for 6 days.  After 2 days-I
moved children and
dogs, while Bill manned
the kerosene heater.
Joining my mother and
her 2 dogs for the
holidays was fun after the
chaos died down.
Chinese food for
Christmas dinner was a
first.  We played
“Trouble” (appropriately).
Bill’s father fell and was
in the hospital,so after
the electricity came on,
we drove 1,400 miles to
see him.  Fortunately, he
lives in Florida.  I do not
think I could have driven
to a colder climate.  I’ll
never forget my 14-year
old Husky shivering
under my  old fur coat
(which I slept in)....A Dr.
Zhivago holiday.

Jennifer Scherer is
considered essential
personnel and had to
work at the nuclear
pharmacy...they deliver
to hospitals.....her shift
relief couldn’t make it in
because the roads were
so bad so she had to
sleep at work.

Patti Hanby
Monday before
Christmas neighbors’
pipe burst and flooded
my condo.  Fans and
dehumidifier ran until
elec. went out Thursday
a.m. Electric was not
back on until Sunday
night.  Office also out so
spent Sunday finding
generator. Fans and
dehumidifer ran then
kicked a breaker with
overload.  Add’l damage
since electric went out.
Demolished hallway,
drywall, carpet and
basement.  Still under
construction.

Molly Hardman
Power off:  12/23 7am....
Power on 12/26 9pm
We had our Christmas on
12/26 at the Courtyard
by Marriot in Dublin.
That was after a
marvelous Max & Erma’s
dinner.  It was one of our
best Christmas’s ever!
Ironically, my mom’s apt.
got flooded because the
upstairs neighbors put a
new hose on their washer
& didn’t tighten it
properly.   Go figure.......

Nicole Conroy
On Wed. Before the
power outage my
husband and I were
contemplating when we
should travel to St. Louis
to visit my family for
Christmas.  The snow
came earlier than
expected so we planned
to leave on Thursday
morning after the snow
storm was to stop.  We
realized our traveling
plans would be put on
hold when we woke up
Thursday morning with
no power, no phone
service, our trees in our
neighbor’s yard and
blocking our driveway-
thus trapping us in our
home.  We spent the next
few days in a nice hotel
with my husband’s
family.  Our electricity
finally came on, on
Christmas day.  I got to
spend Christmas for the
first time with my husband’
s family and we made it
to St Louis to spend New
Year’s with my family for
the first time.  Everything
worked out.

Tamika Dean
Hip, Hip Hooray.... I was
one of the few that did
not experience the
terrible dilemma of
sleeping in the hotel
during Christmas.
However, I did experience
driving on the black ice
which caused my
girlfriend (who happened
to be driving the car) and
I to slip and cross the
other side of the road
into a guard rail.  Thank
God no one was hurt, but
boy do I have a much
greater respect for Black
ICE on the highway.

Terry Deever
His power went out on
Thursday around 3:30am
and came back on
Saturday around 4:00pm

I competed with Nicole as
far as intermittent power
outages:  I was out on
Thursday at 7:30am, on
Sunday at 11:30, out on
Monday from 1:00pm to 3:
00pm, out on Tuesday
from 10:30pm to 5am.
Nicole was on Thursday
at 2am, on Christmas
Day, off Christmas
evening from 8pm-9pm
and offf Monday while
working from home.

Kulpana endured the
power outage with her
dog-four days under
blankets. "Remember",
Kulpana, "look up
petswelcome.com for a
hotel that takes dogs."

I competed with Mollie
and opened Christmas
gifts at the Courtyard by
Marriot, only I was on
Cassady Rd.  My parents
visiting from Alabama
found this to be most
interesting.

Patti hopped in the car
with Vince and Java and
drove to Arkansas to
spend the holidays with
her parents.  The ice
storm stretched all the
way to Memphis.

And, thank goodness
Tiffany didn’t deal with a
power outage, because
in case you didn’t know it,
she got engaged!!!!!
Congrats!!!!!

Fitness Questions for Patti.

Send a question to Patti about anything you might
want to be educated on with respect to fitness. If
we publish your question, you will receive a menu
item of your choice from our cafe...it's easy to
submit a question-just reply to this e-mail.

This month, Patti is responding to question from
Molly Hardman about SAD.  What  are the
symptoms of SAD and causes of?

Most people are familiar with the seasonal
affective disorder (SAD), but, we all may suffer
with it to lesser degrees and it can affect our
weight loss and outlook on life.

Serotonin levels are low with people who are
depressed due to SAD, but a new study show that
even healthy people have lower levels of
Serotonin in the fall and winter, especially here in
Ohio.

Symptoms include:
•        Depression, feelings of gloom and
despondency for no apparent reason
•        Lethargy, lack of energy
•        Anxiety, inability to cope
•        Social problems, irritability not wanting to
see people
•        Sleep problems, finding it hard to stay
awake during the day and having disturbed nights
•        Loss of libido, not interested in sex or
physical contact
•        Craving for carbohydrates and sweet foods,
increased appetite leading to weight gain.

Even if you do not have full blown SAD, you may
have some or all of these symptoms to a lesser
degree and they may interfere with your emotional
well-being.

In his book Sunlight, by Dr. Zane R. Kime, he
writes, "Stimulation of the thyroid gland (by
sunlight) increases the body's basal metabolism
rate, burning up more energy or calories.''

The other alternative to combat SAD is making
sure that you get some sunlight.  It is difficult in
the fall and winter months to get enough.

One of the ways that you can balance out this lack
of sunshine in the winter is through the use of full
spectrum lights.

We offer them at our fitness center and online.  I
like to keep a flood light (as seen below) by my
computer all winter long. I usually leave it on for
an hour or so a day. Other people
might try the “light boxes” to sit in front of for
additional full spectrum lighting.

A WEBSITE FOR A HEALTHY BODY, MIND AND
SPIRIT

Judy Shepler-Member Spotlight

Judy, Patti and I really appreciate you taking the
time to answer these questions for the newsletter.

Question: How long have you been coming to
Body/Spirit Fitness? You are one of our charter
members! What brought you through the front
door? In other words, how did you find out about
us?

I actually found out about Body/ Spirit Fitness
through Bernie! Iwas taking a yoga class with
Bernie at Mt. Carmel and she told me about BSF,
she had heard about if from a neighbor. I came by
the next day and spoke to Michelle, I took 2
classes right away and joined immediately! I have
been a loyal member since Dec.2oo3.

Question: What makes you so loyal-you seem so
dedicated to your fitness routines....

I truly feel so much better when i work out, I feel
I'm doing something positive for myself and I really
enjoy spending time at BSF! Everyone is so
friendly and caring , you feel like you are part of a
special family!

Question: What is your current favorite class and
why?

The circuit training class and shape and tone
(GROAN), I like the fact that you get aerobics,
weight trainig and conditioning all in one class!

Question: Many times you'll come in and work out
with a tape. What makes you motivated to do this
and how do you select the tape you'll work with?

I'll usually pick a tape with some aerobics and then
do either pilates or yoga. I like the fact that if I
can't make it to a scheduled class, I know that I
still can have the opportunity to work out on my
own.

Question: You are very supportive of the
instructors and we appreciate it. What allows you
to do this?

I love all the instructors, they are all very different
in their approach to their classes. They are very
caring and they make everyone feel comfortable
in their classes.

Question: What do you feel that people should
know about Body/Spirit Fitness that you haven't
outlined previously?

BSF is not just a place for exercising. I feel like I
have made friends there that truly care about me!
The instructors are always eager to hear
feedback on their classes and are willong to try
new workouts that the members may request.
Because it is small, there is a homey, warm feeling
there and I'm so happy to have found BSF!

Need a personal trainer but can't afford it?

We would like to offer a special session to
educate you on the merits of our Precor

session on what the equipment does and
how you should safely use it. Sign up via
e-mail or in person at the studio. Based
on interest, we will set up times and
dates. Sessions will be $5 and will last for
one hour.  Sign up sheets are by the coat

Did you know?.....
We offer private
parties for whatever
occasion you can
dream up.

What about a party
with a psychic?

You don't even have to
have an occasion.

We're here for you-let
us know how we can
help!
