| The Soaring Rate of Obesity By Patti Petrella |
A recent study published in Pediatrics, reveled that obese children are at a high risk for depression and other mental disorders. Girls were especially susceptible to this risk, and the longer they had been overweight the more prone they were to be depressed. The stress of being overweight seems to be at least partially responsible for this occurrence. Feelings of worthlessness and self-hate are prevalent among these young people. As obesity rates in children soar, so do the rates of depression, We have to educate people on the food they are feeding their children, as well as getting them out and exercising. When it comes to nutrition, most people feed better food to their pets than they do their own children, without realizing it. Visualize, if you will, placing the following foods in your dog's food dish throughout the course of the day... a sugary cereal, a donut, a couple of cokes, a cheeseburger, french fries, a bag of potato chips, a pizza, a couple of cookies and a bowl of ice cream. If you look at it like that, it's no wonder most of our pets are in better shape than some of our kids. And the problem is getting worse every year, with advertisers spending billions to get you to feed junk food to your family. By simply giving up processed foods for whole foods, you can shed hundreds of calories a day, and also have the advantage of vitamins, minerals and fiber packed in a wholesome diet. Consider the following definition (from NFPT) of junk food. Any man-made digestible, or partially digestible substance lacking sufficient enzymes or the enzyme producing ingredients required to breakdown the host substance, thus calling upon the body to produce the appropriate necessary enzymes on its own. Whole or unprocessed foods contain ample enzymes for healthy digestion. Most processed foods do not. The other reason for obesity is the sedentary lifestyle of many children today. They should be doing at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise everyday. An hour would be even better. Nearly half of all teens between the ages of 12 and 21 are not exercising on a regular basis, at all. Parents can make a positive impact by encouraging them to take aerobic type classes, sports, dance, or even just walking every day. Resistance training in moderation is also recommended. |
