Ok it is June 1st and we are just now getting the newsletter out!! Oops!
Join us on FRIDAY, JUNE, 3RD FROM 5:00pm until 8:00pm. We are having an Open House to say farewell to loyal Body/Spirit Fitness member, Molly Hardman. Sadly, Molly is moving away from us, so we want to say good-bye properly. We'll be serving snacks and drinks for you to enjoy as you mingle...
Join us on Saturday, June 4th at 12:30pm. We'll be showing the DVD "Super Size Me, A Film of Epic Portions of Morgan Spurlock". Patti has always been raving about this movie. I took my son Connor, for a well child yearly physical and the Pediatrician told me that I had to see the movie. He told me it wasn't for me to lose weight or anything, but to understand what Connor would be facing in terms of media messaging and advertising. He recommended that Connor be required to watch it when he was in 7th grade, so that he could fully understand it.....so.......come get educated with us.
"Why are Americans so fat? Two words: fast food. What would happen if you ate nothing but fast food for an entire month? Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock does just that and embarks on the most perilous journey of his life. The rules? For 30 days he can't eat or drink anything that isn't on McDonald's menu; he must wolf three squares a day; he must consume everything on the menu at least once and supersize his meal if asked. Spurlock treks across the country interviewing a host of experts on fast food and an equal number of regular folk while chowing down at the Golden Arches. Spurlock's grueling drive-through diet spirals him into a physical and emotional metamorphosis that will make you think twice about picking up another Big Mac."
Patti will be making popcorn for us to enjoy. We'll have some discussion after the movie.
Please reply back to us via e-mail or in person if you can come to one or both of the events. We just want to be able to plan appropriate seating and refreshments so that everyone is comfortable.
No charge for either event, of course. We'd love to see you! Plus, this is a come as you are, if you have just exercised, mingle in your sweats (I'll be serving food in mine!!)....Carol and Patti

Fitness Questions for Patti.
Why be a vegetarian?
Both the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the American Dietetic Association have endorsed vegetarian diets. Studies have also shown that vegetarians have stronger immune systems than meat-eaters and that meat-eaters are almost twice as likely to die of heart disease, 60 percent more likely to die of cancer, and 30 percent more likely to die of other diseases. The consumption of meat and dairy products has been conclusively linked with diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, cancer, clogged arteries, obesity, asthma, and impotence.
Another important aspect, is if you, like the ancient Yogis want to be happy and peaceful then you wouldn't want to cause harm to a sweet and sensitive being with feelings.
Yogis believe that to eat meat puts the fear and violence of that animals death into the body.

On Sunday, we will be offering meditation for compassion.
This is tonglen practice, and it is a method for connecting with suffering. This includes ours and others, and all around us— wherever we go. It is a method to overcome fear of suffering and to open our heart to others. Primarily it is a method for awakening the compassion that is inherent in all of us.
Setting Goals for Fitness by Patti Petrella
Making concrete goals and plans help keep you motivated and attentive to what you are doing. We also want to look at the “how and why” behind the goal.
The “why” should not be for other people. Trying to please others with your weight loss will only set you up for failure and misery. You simply can’t make others happy, but you can make changes for your own happiness and well- being.
Secondly, it is important to look at “how” you see yourself to know how to set your goals. Accepting and loving your body now will give you the self confidence to begin to make any changes in your life and physical image.
If you are judging the way you look through the eyes of other people, it is not a real self image. It was pushed upon you by other people.
You need goals so you won’t just try to watch what you eat and hope for the best. Goals keep you honest. You will not be as likely to “fall off the wagon” if you know you are seeking a certain objective. It keeps your motivation in high.
If you make goals and define them, you will be able to experience the success of striving for and achieving them all along the way. You should be specific. I also like putting them in an absolute framework. “Not I want to lose weight,” but “I am going to lose 50 lbs and this is how.” Then go on to list; working out, eating a balanced diet, keeping you blood sugar level and so on.
Keep your goals by your bed and readthem every morning as you get up and every evening as you go to bed.
